What’s the purpose of cloud computing? By Wikipedia “agreed standards” is
“internet (“cloud”) based development and use of computer technology (“computing”). It is a style of computing in which typically real-time scalable resources are provided “as a service” over the Internet to users who need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure (“in the cloud”) that supports them.” (wikipedia)
On short-run applicability it’s a platform for the embedded information for the future dynamic actions of the Internet of Things’ (wikipedia) gadgets, inside and outside companies. For now it’s a medium for a better comprehension and creation of knowledge, offered by big companies a better and supposedly semi-open and optimized “service” over the internet. Data is there for the grasp of the beholder, what you do with it it’s your responsability and also of the target community. For now the bigger parcel of information content it’s companies propriety, the important “clouds” belong to the shareholders, and each of their knowledge is for the use of each company.
In the meantime the Cloud for Social Information is building up through Authoring tools (e.g., blogs), Collaboration tools (e.g., wikis), Tagging systems (social bookmarking: e.g., del.icio.us, Flickr, CiteULike), Social Networking (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, Essembly), Collaborative Filtering (e.g., Digg, the Amazon Mechanical Turk, Yahoo answers), Social Information Aggregation (e.g., scratchmysoul.com)… and whatever may yet come in the near future. There is a Cloud out there that is building up content, and that content needs to be Computed and openly Comprehended. Companies proprietary servers are being replaced by the Internet Servers. Companies Customers and Suppliers are becoming Internet Customers and Suppliers, that at the same time are offering a “service” and are becoming a unicellular Company by themselves.
Do you want to know about so and so? Ask the Internet Cloud! Do you want pineapple from Madeira? Here, there are this and this person/company that can sell it to you, or exchange it with other things, or just give it for free!! To catch a glimpse of the future of Internet you have to extrapolate this happenings and (r)evolutions. Whatever you do, Internet will become what you, as a person, couldn’t do physically: a mean to socialize, to exchange data, information, knowledge, wisdom – directly, on the fly. Those mental and physical constrictive barriers in social behaviour (avoiding eye contact) were personificated by a firewall, a monitor – a Second Life. Those barriers, in the Internet, are becoming day-by-day virtually transparent. Until there is, again, “nothing” between the sender and the receiver – no restrains – just you, a “gadget” (the adaptative mean), the Internet of Things (the Cloud, almost sentient), and whoever is on the other side. It becomes a representative hyper-dimension-reality of the physical world. Everything will be tag based, CC (Creative Commons) based, OSS (Open source software) based, holographic 4D visualizations based, real time sensorial and sensitive based (what you see I see, what you hear I hear, what you smell I smell, what you feel I feel) – this one being the next Cloud, the sensorial one, that for now is represented by the collective of words of emotions and state of being (Universe, Wefeelfine). There’s a new “Cloud” out there. There’s a near following transmutation, an octave above of the status quo. We become the Cloud. See you over there.
