short-thoughts

Controlling the Internet is not on the plans of CloudViews.Org, but if we were allowed or have the opportunity to do it we will definitely choose to do it as Rives is planning.

This is very off-topic, but at the same time it’s a very thoughtful presentation, specially for those who are planning vacations… :)

I have to admit that this type of short post could transmit the idea of a follow-the-hype initiative, but that was not the intention. So following some feedback on the Google Groups I’ve decided to clarify some of my initial thoughts.

First, I have to clarify on what part of Cloud Computing I was talking about. As I’ve written here (http://www.cloudviews.org/2008/12/cloud-computing-the-internet-becomes-our-computer/) the SaaS layer is the one, in my perspective, that could have more relevance to the user’s daily work or in the user’s perspective of the Cloud. And it’s precisely there where I think that products such as the Google Chrome OS and the Palm WEB-OS could have a strong impact. Not because they are thin clients to access the Cloud but because they will put the cloud working for users.

The perfect sandbox or ecosystem for SaaS applications is the web browser, but because its development is so dependent on the development of the underlying OS, I think that having both developed in an integrated way could be a major step forward.

To be able to have a perfect Could OS we still need to develop simple things as:

Those are simple examples that I think could be easily developed if they are built in a integrated way.

It’s obvious that in a commercial perspective, and being Google one of the top developers on the SaaS market, to have a complete Could ecosystem is something that they would love to have, and it’s precisely here that they should be careful and try not to close this platform and make it only available to their products. Taking the VMware (Virtualization) example, don’t forget that we are now trying to discussed which Virtual Machine Open Format is more suitable to prevent the vendor lock-in problem.

This may sound “bizarre”, but it actually has to do with real death’s (Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson), as you can see at: http://www.elasticvapor.com/2009/06/day-cloud-died.html

I’ve never been a fan of netbooks (the small keyboard always threw me off) but after seeing Nuno Godinho using one at the CloudViews conference I’ve started to get curious on these little fellows.

Now I’m getting even more curious after seeing the appealing operating system that Jolicloud is working on.

Thank you all for this incredible experience.

After two days of vivid talks and thought exchanges we think that we were all able to acknowledge how Cloud Computing is changing how IT technologies and users are related. And how the Cloud Identity is being clarified and transformed into a clean and well defined paradigm.

We are already working on new events, and we are looking forward to see you all at the CloudViews.Org – Cloud Computing Conference 2010.

For those who were not able to view our intro video, where it is again.

We have also provided photos of the event, and also a presentation’s summary.

If you have any doubts or want to share with us your thoughts please send an email or continue to follow our work at the CloudViews.Org.

It’s still  premature to do a deep analysis of the results of CloudViews.Org – CloudComputing Conference 2009 — we are still very tired and working on subjects that were postponed due to the hard work needed to organize it. One important conclusion that we can take from the talks and thoughts produced on the event, is the answer to the  “To Cloud or not to Cloud” question.

To Cloud or not to Cloud, will only have an answer after a very detailed analysis of each specific case.

CloudViews.Org only aims to make available the necessary tools to allow the most accurate answer.

In the last days, some news were released about the location of Google Data Centers, like for example the  Google container data center tour video  and the Revealed: where Google’s data centres are around the world article

In my opinion, this kind of news are positive, but can be negative…

They are positive, because consumers can feel more save, after all they ”know” where their data is stored, the exact locations, etc., in a way we can say that  it’s like if they can “touch it”.

But, just like consumers can know where their data is stored, so can terrorists. I know that Google have backup Data Centers, etc. etc. but…

I will share some information, I tweet the Google container data center tour video with one of those programs that short and track the links, the results are the following (until now):

Total Clicks : 582
3 Major Locations
:  I will not disclosure the exact country, but it’s a country with terrorism activities and was in war very recently: 540; United States: 20; Portugal: 11

Whta’s your opinion? “it’s positive or negative to know where Google Data Centers are located?”  Thanks.
